Someone working in horse racing described Twitter and receiving tweets to be a “distraction”. Of course, it is. Anything that makes you take your eye off the ball when at work is a distraction. At least for myself, Kate Beckinsale is a distraction.

Where was I…Hell, WhatsApp is a distraction. But we’re too polite to say, “Kindly stop sending asinine messages, or worse yet, yuck yuck ‘jokes’ that aren’t funny.”

HEAR THAT WAKE UP CALL?

“No, man, please. I really don’t wanna see it or talk about it.” It was a friend telling another friend about something or another he had found on someone we vaguely know on social media. Why did it matter? “But the huge numbers here are bullsh*t”, continued the other friend. “They’re not legit. They’re all private accounts with no previous posts!” Why did this matter?

I sat there and thought about that saying how there’s no such thing as bad publicity. Remember that? These days?

Maybe too many of us have way too much time on our hands and which is why we continue to feed the social media beast.

THE RETURN OF THE PETER PRINCIPLE

It’s mind boggling just how many with absolutely zero idea about marketing and how marketing depends on the very best creative product for it to prove its effectiveness are in charge of…marketing. It’s been like this for too long. Maybe it’s just not a priority. Maybe accepting mediocrity says how far we’ve slipped down that totem pole of life’s priorities.

Some of us saw this happening even before “The Peter Principle” was published. The main takeaway from the book was how incompetence was actually promoted. Why? Different reasons. Perhaps it was a new business needing someone to add to a fledgling organisation chart and hired anyone who came with the right asking price? Usually, when this little product became a success, that “marketing” person was kept on because there was now an advertising agency involved to help them- and the product- move along.

It seems to give something relevance. It’s like today’s mot de jour: Ping- as in, “Let me PING you something.” Ping? Really? Hipster talk? Not another plate of warmed over waffles and clich├ęs?

SOCIAL MEDIA: HOW EFFECTIVELY IS HORSE RACING USING IT? REALLY.

There was a time not really that long ago though time often flies on unexpected wings at a worldwide music conference in Munich when us executives listened to a panel of young Facebook execs explain how we could use the social media platform- very new at the time- to sell more music. To work closer with music fans. Introduce new music much more cost effectively. And with more pinpoint accuracy. How MySpace was finished. But never ever thinking that this thing called “social media” would get off the ground, we never listened.

Ignorance and arrogance came into play and most of us saw their presentation as a break to grab some chocolate muffins and chat up one of the Facebookers.

We -the music industry- had successfully sued illegal file sharing site Napster and co founders Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning and believed that nothing was going to change our world. The six star lifestyle was going to continue. So much for that dream.

WHERE ARE HORSE RACING’S MAD MEN?

“Does horse racing really need to be creative? Doesn’t it kinda just sell itself?” It was a two part question asked by a small group of very international creative types during a long lunch earlier this week at a hotel in Hong Kong.

Some had had their flights canceled because of a rampaging Typhoon Mangkhut and were taking shelter from the storm. Others were soaking in the experience of being caught in a real typhoon for the first time. My thoughts were with friends in the Philippines. And those here and their families and property there. Meanwhile Twitter went into such ferocious overdrive with constant updates and videos from so many alarmists, it needed its caffeine intake taken away.

At the end of it all, we come here alone, we leave here alone and we do our best to fill in the middle bits with things that have something of us in it. Guess this is what’s called a legacy.

I ended up in the creative field possibly because my mother was a painter, my father was a singer and pianist and I was left handed. Where I was born- Colombo in Sri Lanka- being left handed meant that one had inherited the devil’s hand.

LET’S MOVE AWAY FROM THE SHEEPLES, SHALL WE?

It really doesn’t matter. Nothing really matters, because there’s nothing we- you and I- can do about any of it- Facebook, all the many ills plaguing what was baptised “social media” and which all the time was Rosemary’s Baby grown up and in control of malleable minds feeding them with more and more and more clutter until priorities became lost in the shuffle.

The Bill Cosby trial, Trump, the Russians, the Chinese, Fleetwood Mac. Whatever it is that interests others are doing, but which might not be on the same page as the hymn book from which you’re singing is often just more clutter- if you choose to allow all this randomness in. It would be boring as hell if we all fell in line and became lemmings following the Pied Piper of Hamlyn. There’s a necessity to move away from the sheeples. It’s called survival and it took a houseguest to remind me of all this. It was the wake up call needed to still “belong”, but also remain detached enough to focus on individual thinking. Leave the sheeples behind. They’ll be fine. Like misery, mediocrity loves company.
