SWIMMING AGAINST THE TIDE

There are fans and there are artists. Fans tend to offer support and, most of all, inspiration. The artist creates. Hopefully, someone’s watching or listening or understanding what they’re trying to say with their work. Their work is their life and vice versa.

Art or being creative is not a 9 to 5 job. It’s 24/7. It’s not an exacting science. It’s born out of thinking outside the box because there IS no box. It’s something that cannot be learned. It comes from within.

Where and when do ideas come from? It really doesn’t matter.

WHY SRI LANKA? WHY ANYWHERE?

The Beatles sang about how the more one travels, the less one knows. And in the clutter of social media, Wikipedia wisdom and Google ga ga, we’re surrounded by a constant barrage of everything that’s nothing.

Though we know it’s all pretty much meaningless, it often seems like we’re conditioned to let this online world in. And this Easter Sunday came the numbingly tragic events- all the evil that struck Sri Lanka with that mystery train of those online and texperts with their own agendas and conspiracy theories.

Someone working in horse racing described Twitter and receiving tweets to be a “distraction”. Of course, it is. Anything that makes you take your eye off the ball when at work is a distraction. At least for myself, Kate Beckinsale is a distraction.

Where was I…Hell, WhatsApp is a distraction. But we’re too polite to say, “Kindly stop sending asinine messages, or worse yet, yuck yuck ‘jokes’ that aren’t funny.”

“No, man, please. I really don’t wanna see it or talk about it.” It was a friend telling another friend about something or another he had found on someone we vaguely know on social media. Why did it matter? “But the huge numbers here are bullsh*t”, continued the other friend. “They’re not legit. They’re all private accounts with no previous posts!” Why did this matter?

I sat there and thought about that saying how there’s no such thing as bad publicity. Remember that? These days?

Maybe too many of us have way too much time on our hands and which is why we continue to feed the social media beast.

MIX, STIR AND SERVE

It’s about time management. But more about timing. Add to this what really inspires and motivates you to go out on a limb- and when- but with calculated thinking. Does the money matter? Money always matters. But there comes a time when it’s about “breaking from those chains that bind”. Leaving the Church Of Stupidity.

It’s like a marriage. If it’s not working out despite all the counselling and promises, it’s, yes, time. to move on. Time To Say Goodbye. Andreas Bocelli is singing about it right now.
